Students

RefServe offers flexible conversational support to intermediate and advanced adult refugee English learners. We meet with learners on Zoom, typically once a week for one hour, although this may be adjusted on a case-by-case basis depending on availability.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who do you accept as students?

We accept adult (18+) refugees, asylum seekers, internally displaced persons, and stateless persons. If your status is not listed here but you are interested in learning with us, please reach out and we will consider your request on a case-by-case basis.

How often do you accept new students?

Applications are open from September 10th to October 10th during the fall semester, and from February 10th to March 10th during the spring semester. Acceptance is on a first-come first-serve basis; those who do not make the cut-off will have priority in the next round of applications.

What level of English is required?

Our students preferably already have attained at least an intermediate level of English proficiency, though we are open to working with advanced beginners on a case-by-case basis.

Are there group classes available?

We do not offer group classes, only one-on-one lessons that are tailored to the needs of each student. That being said, if you and up to three other family members/friends have achieved similar levels of English and are hoping to have lessons together, we will consider your request on a case-by-case basis.

Do you assign homework?

We typically do not assign homework, though if you would like homework, this is something you can discuss with your tutor.

How often do students meet with their tutor(s)?

Students typically meet once per week for one hour with their tutor(s). If you would like to meet more or less often, we will consider your request on a case-by-case basis.

Do you offer supplies?

We can help you obtain a laptop device for virtual lessons if needed.
